Health Arena Info... Stages of Change

Are You a Pre-contemplator……???

Are you one of those people who blissfully float along in life and let the wind catch your hair saying “It will be alright on the day,” or “Nah, It will never happen”. Have you decided that while you remain unaware of any discomfort to your daily life that there is no need to address any change and continue on your current route.

If we are talking about a persons immediate current desire to do nothing,……. that there might be an issue – but they can see no issue, so they see there is no concern, when there clearly is a concern….(for example a weight issue) then they could fall under the little word known as a  Pre-contemplator….

Yes, that is right………. a Pre-contemplator.

healthy living…

Pre-contemplation is a stage in a change of behaviors that address the readiness of a person to move forward from their current position (doing nothing -blissfully ignorant) along a continuum into an area of change. Pre-contemplation may well cover a gamut of behaviors such as smoking, drinking alcohol, weight loss etc, or one that can be easy to explain like changing someones behavior in order for them to start up exercise. (Di Clemente CC, Prochaska JO 1992)

When someone has a weight gain issue, exercise is a helpful tool (along with a height/weight calorie controlled plan) to help maintain a healthy BMI and weight range. This does not mean that at this blissfully unaware stage that nothing can be done or said to help encourage someone to move forward towards change or in this instance exercise.

Goals are Important for a person to see that staying at the current weight and doing nothing will make the issue stay the same. Maybe you can help them to see a future for themselves.

  • Help the person understand the reason or reasons behind why change may be important to their life.
  • Understand where the person presently is stationed in their life.
  • Employ empathy as to their current situation ….and be mindful of this.
  • Encourage future and open conversations, without telling the person ‘What’ to do.
  • Validate the persons reasons for being who they are.

Always acknowledge that a Conversation is a start in the right direction, and because there has not been added pressure the person may return to you when they change their mind……….

One way, is to enjoy a nice glass of red wine while relaxing on the couch. (It may help – but dosent solve the main objective) or you could indulge yourself  in a mood altering exercise regime. To clear the head -so to speak- is a positive way to indulge in the new you. Some research points to exercise as being a natural remedy to help ward off, slow and alleviate panic attacks and anxiety. (Depression and Anxiety, 2008) This does not mean that simply by getting out and running around that exercise will fix a diagnosed issue, however it does help to improve the problem by supplying clean CO2 enriched air to your body. This has to be good for you. The continual strive for improve to alleviate anxiety and panic attacks will continue, however do start a gentle regime-and see what happens. In conjunction with other therapies is could be the boost or change you are looking for.
  • sleep Normalization – It has been proven that by exercising even 10 -15 minutes a day can help to normalize sleep patterns. Some research shows that by increasing the serotonin in the brain through exercise that it  gives the brain a boost (nice thoughts about yourself) and can in turn relax any stressful thoughts at night while trying to sleep. We all know what it feels like to be exhausted in a healthy way and what a good nights sleep it produces…..sleep like a rock.

Motivation….. Continued

Ok, Now you have started somewhere with this now and Improved ‘Motivated you’….Where to from here. There are always good reasons to keep on the path….The Final Destination is in sight or what we call….the ‘End Goal’.

What is the End Goal? What does it look like to you? With visualization and what you have to look forward to, you now you have taken steps to get closer to it (the goal) – and it should be your inspiration to continue.

  • Start with Experimenting ……….Dont let the boredom set in now you have started.

So consider Exercise as an example….You will need to have more than one type of exercise to keep you in tip top shape and to continually challenge your body and mind. Try starting to exercise with a friend, relative or even your husband/wife. Then vary your technique. For example, try a gym, as well as walking, riding a bike, swimming etc with your friend. (They can help you to stay motivated and keep you honest) Remember – when you start it short be the short term goal looking toward the end goal.

  • Write it down….Have your goal ready to access so you can continue on step by step as you previously planned out..
  • Write yourself a Contract. This is perfect for those who start, stop, start, stop…this will help to encourage you to stay on track. “I promise to go to the Gym at least 3 times a week” – after all I am paying for it”. This will definitely get you results. You turn up-results will follow.
  • Build a Mantra. This may sound a bit unusual but Mantras are extremely helpful for following a dream and turning it into a reality. ie ‘My passion is to strive, work hard and achieve.’ make your own. Write it down and say it to yourself. Over time it becomes who you become.
  • Focus on the task at hand. Give it 100 percent to the challenge.
  • Set the Mood. This means get ready for Change and the future.
  • Dont get defeated. Attitude towards the task is half of the battle.
  • Break old habits and turn them into new and fresh ones. People will notice the change and so should you….

There is no time like the Present! Forget Procrastination……

Procrastination…..A big word. But what is it? A word that everyone has come across at some stage in there life. Its meaning…..“The action of delaying or postponing something”.

Does that word and meaning sound like something that has happened to you. Well it certainly has happened to me.

Why is it that people Procrastinate over trying something new or moving forward?

One of the reasons might include the feeling of failure in trying or in turn when you try you will fail. Same thing….. Is it because when you take that next step you become scared….or you are scared to take the next step. Same thing.

Take a really good example from me. I have procrastinated for a very long time on when and how to start to start a blog. (20 years ago it was a book) My friends have heard (and rolled their eyes ) for the past 20 years that I was going to write and publish books, because I have always said, and still say ‘there is a book in everyone’. Seven years ago I got close and with the help of work colleagues co-wrote and published a booklet which I found very enjoyable. (How to help children of Parents with Mental Health Issues In the Rockingham Region.W.A) It was however written with a group of differing agencies and we were governed by what we could publish. This said – I found the process quite easy.

Starting a Blog via the Internet was an awe inspiring idea, that I continued to procrastinate over. I am one of the least intelligent people to access and utilize the net and a computer .(just ask my friends). My minimal knowledge on the “How To” use the internet drove me to borrow my friends brains and instead of me learning myself, much to my current dismay- I just kept giving my ideas away and let them do it for me. And in turn I never sat down and learnt it myself. I was always scared that I was going to muck it up, go too slow, do it wrong or worse – break it. This I am learning is harder to do than I thought. The worst I can do is to misspell something. So What. And the simple learning Curve is, that I can only get better.

Well frankly, I decided to stop Procrastinating…. and Start.

…time for trials…

I decided to brainstorm ideas of what I seriously would like to do, then carried a notebook around with me for a couple of months to write down ideas. I wrote the Pros and Cons of writing and where I wanted it to end up. If it never got read would I be sad. Well…Yes! But for now I am happy to continue with the fact that I can write. It does feel right! and that this is what I feel I have always wanted to do. Some of my notebook of ideas will flow through my future Blogs. It also becomes clearer where to steer and how to shape the Blog as time continues. Small Ideas can and will become big Ideas. Having Confidence in myself is enough for me to understand that it dosent always have to please everyone else, just me.

There is Nothing to Worry About….. or is there?

From time to time in our lives we can all be faced with Challenges. They range from the the smallest mundane challenge and generally with a single decision can be fixed or managed and overcome, ready to carry on and get ready for the next in life. These are the day to day issues in life that we all have to deal with.. What time to leave home and go to work, what is the quickest route at 8.35 am to take, how to organise dinner and pay bills, shop on the lunch break and so on. Mundane right? Right? Requiring little or no stress on any ones behalf. These issues actually become part of life without even noticing them and management of these become second nature-no thought required.

Well what about the larger ones, the more involved multi leveled time constricting, long term Challenges that affect life, peoples health, their well being, relationships, money? What about something that did not start too stressful, but while you were dealing with the mundane, another part of -“One of your Challenges in life” – it all got out of hand. While you weren’t watching the game,  you took your eye off the ball, someone just hit it for a six and seemingly just flew out of the ballpark. The Issue that is.- not the ball.

And when the ball finally got dropped, rolled to a dead halt and was then found hiding under a bush….. it became a guessing game as to where it all went wrong – the Issue that is, not the ball.

There are many reasons why there wasn’t just a huge ‘Kapow’ and a wake up call to the issue (that is now at hand) it being larger than just a day to day mundane and capable one that can be solved. is it because it became far easier to ignore the growth factor and carry on with life, and because it crept slowly, grew slowly, festered, it got ignored again while hoping it would magically disappear……and then before you knew it ……It was there staring at you larger than life.

The issue then just got scary. This is where it does affect some aspect of life, and it now needs some level of interaction, solution and help to find the next logical step…..

So here is my point.

Tricky path in life…

Where does it become logical, to know that what you have at hand has moved from ‘mundane and easy to handle – to an acceleration of large and scary’… and what to do next………….

Our Amazing bodies……. and what we do with them….or Not!

This is not a health and well being site. It does not profess to be but while I have the ability to write early pieces and practice on how to familiarize myself with my new  site – I would like to write and comment on all aspects of life. After all – Itsmylifetoo. Exercise, Weight Management. Firstly, I would like to acknowledge that all over the world people are becoming more and more health conscious. There is a lot of thought these days that goes into the realms of Diet and Exercise. It is a billion dollar business and can be lucrative –  for those interested and that want to play the game. There is a large variant of people that range from the unaware sloths, who continue to step closer to their graves with bad choices, food or otherwise, and the alternative people who overdo every step of the process and lack some form of moderation in search for that perfect state. So, what to do? The question has been asked for decades and with those who have chosen to be involved has to some degree worked -or not. Maybe while dealing with Diet, Exercise and food management for the last 7 years within my role at a female gym (Curves) – I can literally weigh in on the subject (excuse the pun)
It would be a good time for any person wanting to take up the challenge of self Improvement through Exercise and diet to indeed comprehensively make a checklist before they start. It may help to enhance the outcome of their personal Challenge.
It does go without saying……..

Start somewhere……..

It is Paramount to realize that the inner Ego definitively drives the Self. The Body is guided by not only by what happens in our day to day dealings – but that our mind or Ego plays a large part in who we are and what we are. Firstly, we are what we think we are…. and what we think about ourselves reflects outwardly in our personal worlds.

There are a multitude of people who visit the gym daily and realistically find that size does -or does not matter. If you are comfortable with your size and weight, then it becomes no ones business to tell you otherwise. With respect as to why you are visiting the gym, and if it is to improve your health……..then there in lies your answer and it is a matter for you to begin some-where, any-where because yesterday you were doing nothing…………

Spirit Of Enquiry

its beginning to look....
its beginning….
These days in which the human ‘spirit of inquiry’ is more alive than at any time in history, we are constantly bombarded with social media. The masses are finding more ways to introduce, sell, buy, learn and ponder this increasingly tech savvy world. So to start somewhere and to learn as progression takes place, is the only way forward. Do I want to be part of this? Of Course? I want to be in the human race as a constant inquirer and to selectively take my place in the learning curve. My goal is to Blog, to achieve and respond and be inspired and to inspire. It will be how I want to go forward. I do not want to just sit by and wished I had tried it for myself. I will try.
For someone once said to me “These are My good Old days”. not tomorrow, not in the future – but now!
I want to look back and have contributed. Tread gently and be kind. Itsmylifetoo.
